Sally England
Portals
October 1 — October 16, 2016
Opening Saturday, October 1 7-10 PM
w/ Performance by Early Forms and Surfaces at 8pm
NowSpace is proud to present portals, an installation by Sally England and the artist's first solo exhibition in Los Angeles. England, who lives and works in Ojai, California, creates work exploring the ancient art of macramé (a form of textile construction) through the use of unconventional scale, material, and composition. Using her hands as tools, the labor-intensive process is intimate and meditative as she interprets different archetypal symbols, patterns, and shapes. The results of her work are tactile and magnetizing tapestries that invite us to reconsider the artistic potential of the age-old technique.
Sally England (b. 1979, Michigan) has exhibited her fiber-based installations and wall hangings extensively, including her most recent solo exhibition at the Grand Rapids Museum of Art. England's work can also be found in a multitude of online and print journals as well as in numerous public and private collections. England attended PNCA's Applied Craft & Design graduate program in Portland, Oregon, and currently lives and works in Ojai, California.
Early Forms and Surfaces, an electro-acoustic duo featuring Shelley Burgon on harp and electronics and Neil Harrison on electric guitar. Their music is rooted in song forms combined with free improvisations creating an ambient, cinematic, and ethereal experience.
